'We Must Prepare New Leaders,' but 'The Most Important Thing is Peace': Initial Reactions From Ivorians to Ouattara's Reelection

"The president truly deserves it because he is doing good work," said Mathifa Bonsa, a cashier at Sputnik Africa.

"Everything he has done for Côte d'Ivoire in recent years, he truly deserves to be elected again and again, until the end of time if necessary," added Nadège Tiao, a head chef.

"It's already over because we don't have anyone above to lead us all. We must prepare new leaders. We start preparing now, and in four years, we can provide," stated Ilboudo Richard.

"We more or less expected this, so it doesn't surprise us. But the most important thing is to preserve peace. That's all, peace. It's the same; without peace, we can do nothing," emphasized Franck Olivier, an economic operator.

On Monday, the Independent Electoral Commission declared Alassane Ouattara "provisionally elected" to the presidency after the first round of the presidential election.

However, the results are preliminary and still need to be approved by the Constitutional Council.
