Russia-Ethiopia Collaboration Drives Modernization of Agriculture, State Minister Says

Strengthening science, technology, and innovation remains central to Ethiopia’s plan for modernizing its farming sector, said Efa Muleta, State Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture.

He spoke on the sidelines of the International Science Open Day Exhibition, telling Sputnik Africa that research and development will help unlock the country’s agricultural potential by improving productivity, soil data collection, and digital tools.

Muleta pointed to progress such as the irrigation wheat program and new seed varieties adapted to rural conditions.

He also noted Ethiopia’s efforts to expand initiatives like “Bounty of Baskets” into fish, poultry, and red meat production, while cooperating through CASTIA, BRICS, and the AfCFTA to boost technology transfer and modernize the agricultural ecosystem.

Discussing Russia specifically, he emphasized a long-standing diplomatic bond, saying the two nations work together through biotechnology and “nuclear technology which will help us for agriculture for preserving foods and soil fertility enhancement,” with cooperation set to deepen in the future.
