Somalia's National Air Carrier to Revive After 33-Year Hiatus, Transport Minister Announces
"I want to share good news with the Somali people—before the end of this year, Somali Airlines will officially resume operations," Mohamed Farah Nuh told reporters in Mogadishu.
Both the airline, which ceased operations in 1991 following the collapse of the central government, and necessary equipment are ready, Nuh confirmed.
"We need to show the world that our airports are safe and reliable," he said. "If we can’t yet reach the standards of developed countries, we should at least match those of our neighbors."
This revival is part of a broader upgrade to the aviation infrastructure, which includes renovations to 15 regional airports. Some of these renovations are nearly complete, the minister noted.
