Cameroon’s Constitutional Council announced Monday that President Paul Biya secured 53.66% of the vote in the recent presidential election. Biya, aged 92, is recognized as the world’s longest-serving current head of state.
Opposition candidate Maurice Kamto previously urged Cameroonians to protest if the Council were to announce “falsified and distorted” results. Supporters responded to his call by staging demonstrations across multiple cities.
Protests and Reported Casualties
At least four people were reportedly killed Sunday in Douala, Cameroon’s largest city, according to local media sources. Police have arrested a minimum of 20 demonstrators nationwide following the publication of early vote-count figures on social media.
Legal Challenges Dismissed
Reports indicate that the Constitutional Council has rejected all legal petitions contesting the election outcome.
