Sierra Leone Opens State-of-the-Art Mdeical Center to Combat Maternal Mortality: Presidency
The Kono Maternal Center of Excellence, which was commissioned by President Julius Maada Bio in Koidu City, increases the former hospital's bed capacity from 48 to 120 and introduces the country's first rural-based Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, according to the presidency.
"Every generation is remembered for the foundation it lays. Today, here in Kono, we lay a foundation for life itself," Bio said. "This center is a symbol of our belief that every mother deserves safety, every child deserves a chance, and every Sierra Leonean deserves to live in health and dignity."
Maternal mortality has fallen by more than 70% over the past two decades, with the national rate dropping from 717 to 354 deaths per 100,000 live births since 2019, the president highlighted.
The center will also serve as a national training hub for health workers, advancing Sierra Leone’s goal to reduce maternal mortality below 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030, the presidency noted.
