Moroccan Intellectuals Maintain Direct Cultural Ties With Russia, Unlike West: National Library Director

"These cultural ties with Russia are based on mutual knowledge. Because all Moroccan intellectuals know Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and know Pushkin," Mohamed Elferrane told Sputnik on the sidelines of the 'Joint Effort Forum' in Moscow.

This cultural link was formed independently of Western influence, according to Elferrane: "In everyday Moroccan cultural practice, there is a distinction between Western and Russian cultures".

"Western culture owes much to Russian culture, because one cannot deny that Russian culture has had a significant influence on it. Indeed, there is a brilliant group of Russian names that have managed to establish themselves in Western culture and attract its attention at all levels," he said.

The forum, marking 100 years of public diplomacy, brought together experts and public figures from 60 countries.
