Zambia, Mozambique to Launch Joint Power Generation Project to Improve Regional Energy Security
The initiative aims to build a facility, which is expected to produce 1,500 MW of electricity for both countries, Zambian Energy Minister Peter Kapala noted at the signing ceremony.
“Once [the agreement is] completed, it will not only cover our domestic demand but also provide excess power for export to neighbouring states through the Southern African Power Pool,” he noted.
In addition, the project exemplifies African unity in tackling energy shortages through the sharing of resources, Mozambique’s Energy Minister Carlos Zacarias emphasized.
“This partnership strengthens our friendship and ensures that electricity will fuel industrial growth on both sides of the border,” he said.
Zambian state-owned power company ZESCO and Mozambique’s Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) will work on ensuring reliable electricity access, Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo said at the bilateral talks in Lusaka.
Such project will also generate income and create job opportunities, he added.
