Post-Election Crisis in Cameroon: Developments on October 23
As the country awaits the announcement of the presidential election results, protesters are taking to the streets to support former minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the main rival of incumbent President Paul Biya, who is convinced of his victory.
The opposition leader called on Cameroonians to protest if the Constitutional Council were to announce "falsified and distorted" results. His call has been heeded.
▪ In Guider, in the Far North, residents have once again taken to the streets in large numbers.
▪In Ngaoundéré, in the Adamawa region, many residents have proclaimed Issa Tchiroma’s victory while demanding that Paul Biya respect the will of the ballot box.
▪The official election results will be announced on Monday, although the Constitutional Council of Cameroon was initially expected to release them on October 23.
▪On Wednesday, the Council rejected all petitions contesting the presidential election, paving the way for the announcement of complete results.
▪The only female candidate in the election, Patricia Tomaïno Ndam Njoya, notably requested the total annulment of the October 12 vote, citing widespread fraud and serious irregularities.
▪Internet access in Cameroon was significantly disrupted on October 23 amid protests over alleged irregularities in the presidential election, according to Internet monitor NetBlocks.
