Zimbabwe Opens Electricity Retail & Distribution to Private Companies
The move, announced by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, is designed to improve service and help achieve nationwide access by 2030.
The initiative aims to attract investment in local electricity distribution infrastructure, improving efficiency and expanding access to underserved areas, authorities stated.
The anticipated investments should accelerate:
🟠infrastructure development,
🟠lower government costs,
🟠integrate renewable energy into the national grid.
Under the new model, private companies can be licensed to distribute and retail electricity, especially in underserved and new residential areas, working with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company to expand coverage.
Licensees must demonstrate the technical and financial capacity to manage retail electricity systems according to Zimbabwean regulations.
