Africa Should Focus on Food Self-Sufficiency, Not Just Exports: Professor
Africa needs to reset its priorities, focusing on producing its own food rather than exporting raw materials that yield "very little value," primarily to the global north, Professor Wisdom Akpalu, Chairman of the Governing Council of the Fisheries Commission in Ghana, told Sputnik Africa.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 6th Ordinary Session of the STC on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water, and Environment, Akpalu highlighted the vast potential of the blue economy.
He explained that it encompasses more than just fish, which is often the sole focus when discussing oceans, and emphasized that blue spaces offer diverse opportunities, including tourism and raw materials for medicinal products.
With investment, these resources could provide long-term, sustainable benefits, creating jobs and income for the continent, the professor believes.
Fertilizer plants are expanding across Africa – what does Akpalu think? Watch the video to find out.
