Malawi Authorities Will Detain People Who Try to Smuggle Minerals Out of Country: President
"I will not allow exportation of raw materials from our mines. Raw materials have to be processed here," Peter Mutharika said.
According to the media, the president lamented that Malawi's minerals are being sold abroad at high prices, thereby "cheating" the government. Mutharika therefore promised to issue a decree banning the export of minerals and to prosecute violators.
Malawi's mineral resources, including graphite and rutile, could generate approximately $500 million annually for the country for 100 years, Mutharika also stated.
This result could be achieved "if mining of rutile at Kasiya site in Lilongwe and rare earths at Kangankunde in Balaka are managed properly," he noted.
