Russia Seeks IAEA Assistance to Protect Zaporozhye NPP under Fire from Kiev
The Russian side has asked the organization to facilitate a ceasefire to restore external power to the plant, the Russian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik.
After difficult consultations, security guarantees were obtained from Ukraine to do so, the body added.
It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of number of units and installed capacity: it has six units, each with a capacity of one gigawatt.
In October 2022, the Zaporozhye region and the nuclear power plant became part of Russia. The plant is regularly targeted by Ukrainian fire; recently, it was damaged and the power supply to the nearby town was cut off, according to local authorities.
