Malawi's President Announces Free Education and Emergency Food Imports to Tackle Hunger Primary and secondary education will be free for all Malawian citizens starting in January 2026, newly inaugurated President Peter Mutharika declared during a cultural festival in Thyolo District."Parents will now have no excuse for failing to send their children to school," Mutharika stated, describing education as fundamental to national development. Simultaneously, the president addressed the country's food crisis, revealing that the government is procuring 200,000 tonnes of maize from Zambia to feed over four million food-insecure people.
