Through Russia-Ethiopia Agreement on NPP Construction, Addis Ababa Hopes to Enhance Its Leading Position as Regional Energy Exporter: Timothewos to Sputnik Africa

In response to a question from Sputnik Africa correspondent during his joint press conference with Lavrov, the Ethiopian Foreign Minister highlighted several key points of the recent agreement with Russia regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant:

🟠Enhancing Regional Role: The project marks a major step not only in bilateral relations but also introduces advanced nuclear technology into Sub-Saharan Africa. This positions Ethiopia at the forefront of energy innovation within the region.

🟠Energy Exports: With the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Ethiopia has already begun exporting electricity to neighboring countries such as Kenya, Djibouti, and Sudan. The addition of nuclear-generated energy aims to further strengthen these exports and foster greater regional integration.

🟠Industrialization Drive: Beyond simply providing clean energy, the new nuclear facility aligns with Ethiopia’s broader goals of driving industrial development and modernization efforts across various sectors.

🟠Technological Advancement: By leveraging both traditional hydroelectric resources and innovative nuclear solutions, Ethiopia seeks to establish itself as a leader in artificial intelligence and emerging technological fields crucial for future growth in Africa.
