Necessity is Mother of Invention: Ethiopian Doctor Develops Dual-Power Patient Monitoring System

The lack of medical equipment was the reason for this invention, which runs on both electricity and battery power, Dr. Yohannes Zerihun, who works at the Nirak Health Center in the Waghimra Special Zone of the Amhara Region, told Sputnik Africa.

Zerihun shared an incident where he lost a patient in a remote area of the Amhara region due to the lack of monitoring.

"I live in a city 800 kilometers from Addis Ababa. It has been badly damaged by war and natural disasters. We do not have proper electricity in the city," he said.

The monitor, made using broken medical equipment and discarded metal, is now being used at a local health center.

Dr. Yohannes highlighted that its key advantages are:

low cost,

ease of maintenance,

suitability for rural health centers.

The physician has also invented an operating room table and a colostomy bag for stomach cancer patients, which he donated to St. Paul's Medical College, and is currently collaborating on three other inventions.
