Ghana Reportedly Seizes Mining Equipment in Crackdown on Illegal Forest Operations
A joint task force in Ghana has confiscated seven excavators and 18 water pumps during a raid on illegal mining operations in the environmentally sensitive Neung South Forest Reserve, local media reported.
The operation is reportedly part of ongoing efforts to combat "galamsey" (illegal small-scale mining) that has devastated forest reserves and polluted rivers.
The Neung South Forest, a designated Globally Significant Biodiversity Area, has become a flashpoint where illegal miners clash with both authorities and legal mining concession holders, according to media reports.
While the government has intensified enforcement with regular patrols and equipment seizures, environmental damage reportedly continues, and advocates call for stronger legislation to protect forest reserves from mining activities.
