South African President Calls for National Collaboration to Combat Hunger Amid Rising Food Prices
Around 15 to 16 million people in South Africa face inadequate food access, Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted in his weekly newsletter.
He emphasized that overcoming poverty and food insecurity is a key priority for the Government of National Unity.
"South Africa is amongst 29 countries where the right to food and water is enshrined in the Constitution, and where citizens have resource to the legal system to ensure that this right is enforced," said the president.
While acknowledging existing programs like the School Nutrition Program, which feeds nine million learners daily, Ramaphosa noted that high unemployment and inflation continue to strain household budgets.
Ramaphosa endorsed the recent data-driven "Musa Plan," developed by Stellenbosch University's Center for Social Justice. The plan reflects on the country’s progress towards achieving food security.
Ramaphosa stressed that the ultimate success of this plan requires deeper collaboration between the government, businesses, and civil society.
