South Africa Unveils Major Energy Shift With Nuclear & Gas Expansion Plan
The government has approved a 2.23 trillion rand ($128 billion) energy plan to significantly reduce the country's reliance on coal and increase nuclear and gas power generation.
The revised Integrated Resource Plan aims to cut coal dependency from 58% to 27% by 2042, while expanding nuclear and gas capacity from 3% to 16%.
This is “the single biggest investment program of the post-apartheid era,” and will ensure that “we’re able to achieve energy security,” Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told reporters.
Ramokgopa cited global nuclear financing trends as justification for reviving South Africa's modular nuclear reactor program, which targets net-zero electricity by 2050.
