Cameroon's Presidential Elections: Candidate's Representative Abandons Vote Counting Commission Citing Implausible Turnout Figures
Parfait Mbvoum, who sat on the recount committee as a representative of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, accused the process of fraudulent manipulation concerning voter turnout figures.
In a social media statement, Mbvoum likened the situation to "the straw that broke the camel’s back."
According to him, in peaceful regions, voter turnout was only 50%. However, in conflict-affected Anglophone areas experiencing mass displacement, turnout reached 90%, with every single ballot cast overwhelmingly favoring incumbent President Paul Biya, he noted.
Since polling closed on October 12, Bakary of the opposition FNSC party claimed a substantial lead, according to preliminary results.
Currently, the commission, which started its task on Friday, has finished counting ballots from at least five regions.
Final tallies are expected to be submitted to the Constitutional Court, which is mandated to announce the winning candidate by October 26.
