Louvre Heist Exposes Major Security Gaps in French Museums, Interior Ministry Admits

The jewelry stolen from the Louvre represented “genuine cultural heritage,” said Interior Minister Laurent Nunez.

Thieves broke into the Louvre early in the morning and stole nine pieces of jewelry from the collection of Empress Joséphine, wife of Emperor Napoleon I, local media reported:

A broken crown belonging to Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Emperor Napoleon III, was found near the Louvre, French media said (photo);

The Interior Ministry stated that “three or four” thieves carried out the theft in just “seven minutes,” entering the museum from outside using an aerial construction platform” mounted on a truck to access the “Apollo Gallery; (video 2)”

The Paris public prosecutor’s office announced it has opened an investigation into organized theft and criminal conspiracy.
