'A Brick for Sankara': Global Effort Launched to Commemorate African Icon
In Burkina Faso, a significant fundraising initiative has been launched by the government and the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial to gather 4 billion FCFA ($7 million).
This amount represents 8% of the total budget for the memorial in Ouagadougou, Burkinabè media reported.
Contributions are being accepted through various channels, including mobile money, bank transfers, the Faso Arzèka platform, and in-kind donations.
The campaign is open to all – Burkinabè nationals, other Africans, the diaspora, and international partners, according to Luc Damiba, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister.
"Let each of us contribute at least our brick for Sankara, our bricks for Sankara, and together let's build this universal memorial, a symbol of courage, dignity, and human unity, where present and future generations will learn that Africa can count on itself," Daouda Traoré, President of the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial, stated at the project's launch.
The Thomas Sankara Memorial is envisioned as a vast complex of 16 facilities covering over 14 hectares in Ouagadougou. The statue of Thomas Sankara and his mausoleum have already been erected.
Future developments will include the 87-meter-high Thomas Sankara Tower (a nod to his assassination year), a House of Memories, a museum, library, media library, exhibition space, conference facilities, and an amusement park.
The Burkinabè government is financing 60% of the memorial's construction costs, with the remaining 40% coming from the private sector, public contributions, and external funding, as detailed by Luc Damiba.
