Rooted in Soviet Legacy, Russia ‘Develops Its Relations With African Countries Extensively’: UN Envoy

“Russia, and formerly the Soviet Union, was always friendly with Africa... [and] instrumental in facilitating African countries in getting their independence,” Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik Africa.

He noted that the UN General Assembly has adopted October 14 as the International Day Against Colonialism, a resolution championed by Russia.

“Russia develops its relations with the African countries extensively... we’re witnessing growing trade, we are opening more and more embassies,” Nebenzia added, pointing to expanding cooperation and the creation of a Department for Partnership with Africa.
