Security forces opened fire to disperse crowds gathered to view the body of opposition leader Raila Odinga, local media reported. Thousands had assembled at Kasarani Stadium, where chaos broke out after some mourners attempted to breach security barriers.
Odinga, 80, a former prime minister and prominent opposition leader, died in India on Wednesday, prompting nationwide grief. President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning, and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that Friday, October 17, will be a public holiday in his honor.
A state funeral is scheduled in Nairobi on Friday, followed by burial in his hometown of Bondo on Sunday.
