Turning Waste Into Motion: Ethiopian Engineer Reinvents Car Brakes From Cattle Bones

When most people see discarded cattle bones, Behailu Seboka sees potential. This young Ethiopian mechanical engineer and founder of Askema Engineering has transformed what’s usually thrown away into high-performance car brake components — all made from cattle bones, scrap metal, and ceramics, according to local media.

Starting as a university project, Behailu’s idea has grown into a thriving company in Addis Ababa that now employs 268 people and serves over 6,400 customers. By sourcing materials from slaughterhouses and scrap vendors, Askema not only reduces waste but also drives local innovation and job creation.
