Russia’s Position on Western Sahara is Guided by UN Security Council Resolutions, Lavrov Says

The core principle has long been self-determination for the people of Western Sahara, originally envisioned through a referendum, the Russian foreign minister noted.

Russia considers Morocco’s autonomy plan acceptable—but only if it is agreed upon by all parties involved, he added.

The US unilaterally recognized Western Sahara as part of Morocco during Trump’s first term, declaring the issue closed—but Russia insists a lasting solution requires broad consensus, not unilateral decisions, the top diplomat stated.

The only valid framework remains existing UNSC resolutions; Russia is open to new resolutions only if all stakeholders agree on the proposed settlement principles, he reiterated.
