Aid Cuts Spark Push for African Self-Reliance, Zambian Scholar Says

Decades of Western "development" aid created "a dependency syndrome and killed local initiatives" in Africa, Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka of the University of Zambia told Sputnik Africa, echoing President Hichilema's statements on US aid cuts.

"In a country that heavily funds your health sector, you do not see the need to develop companies that manufacture drugs in your country," the speaker lamented.

He explained that much of the aid wasn't cash, but supplies bought by donors from their own firms—locking African nations into long-term reliance.

Now, with aid scaling down, Zambia is shifting to local funding, expanding its tax base, and building homegrown industries—a move he called "much more of a positive mood than receiving perpetual aid."
