New Archaeological Find Sheds Light on Egypt’s Ancient Military Planning, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Says
The Egyptian archaeological mission at Tell El-Kharoba near Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai discovered a large New Kingdom military fortress, one of the biggest along the ancient Horus Military Road near the Mediterranean coast.
The fortress once formed part of an advanced defensive network guarding Egypt’s link to ancient Palestine, the ministry said in a statement.
The site stands as proof of the military genius of the pharaohs, who built fortresses to secure trade routes and defend their empire’s frontier, Tourism Minister Sharif Fathi stressed.
"This find adds to a series of New Kingdom military fortifications in the region, underscoring Sinai’s historical importance as a unique cultural crossroads with a rich military heritage," the statement read.
The complex features:
🟠a 105-meter southern wall with a guarded entrance;
🟠11 defense towers;
🟠a zigzag wall enclosing a soldiers’ residential area;
🟠a vessel inscribed with Pharaoh Thutmose I’s name;
🟠signs of multiple restorations;
🟠and possibly a nearby military harbor.
