Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) and Kenya Space Agency (KSA) are teaming up on a new satellite project to expand internet access, improve security, and strengthen Africa’s place in the global space industry. The partnership will pool both countries’ skills and resources to bring reliable broadband connection to rural and remote communities. It also aims to support research, train young engineers, and create fair policies that guide how African nations share and use space technology. In the long run, the move could help close the digital gap, boost local economies, and give Africa a stronger voice in the future of space innovation.African Currents reached out to Brigadier (rtd.) Nigeria–Kenya Satellite Partnership Signals Africa’s Space 'Reawakening' - Expert
What began as a courtesy visit by Kenya’s space chief to his Nigerian counterpart has signposted a blueprint for Africa’s growing ambitions in space technology and policy.
In the long run, the move could help close the digital gap, boost local economies, and give Africa a stronger voice in the future of space innovation.
African Currents reached out to Brigadier (rtd.) Hillary Kipkosgey, Acting Director-General and CEO of the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), to discuss the partnership's strategic goals, the benefits it brings, and how it could strengthen Africa’s presence in space technology.
"The partnership that we seek to have with Nigeria, particularly in the context of satellite communications, is how we can leverage the existing capacities to bridge the gaps that we have both in Kenya and Nigeria and also, to a large extent, in Africa. We also know that Nigeria has invested heavily in communication satellites with fairly good coverage and footprint over much of sub-Saharan Africa. And therefore, we felt that it was necessary to explore how we can leverage this capacity to improve the connectivity, not just in Kenya and Nigeria, but also across Africa [...]. It is crucial, and we now have a great reawakening in Africa on the utility and benefits of space technologies across the board," Kipkosgey expressed.
