Namibia Replaces Colonial-Era Street Name With Tribute to Botswana’s Founding President
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and her Botswanan counterpart, Duma Boko, officiated the renaming of Feld Strasse to Sir Seretse Khama Street, marking a historic step in shedding colonial legacies and honoring African unity.
Calling it “more than a change of name – a transformation of meaning,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said the move pays tribute to Sir Seretse Khama, the founding president of Botswana, whose vision of peace, democracy, and regional solidarity continues to inspire the continent.
[The renaming] “symbolizes the enduring friendship between Namibia and Botswana, and celebrates the life of Sir Seretse Khama, one of the visionaries behind SADC’s creation.”
By placing his name at the heart of Windhoek, Namibia reaffirms its commitment to “justice, dignity, and the betterment of all,” the president said.
“May this street forever remind us that leadership grounded in humility and service has the power to transform nations.”
Former Botswana President Seretse Khama Ian Khama expressed “profound humility and deep gratitude” for the gesture.
“This street is more than a name upon a signpost. It is a symbol of the ideals that guided my father’s footsteps — freedom, dignity, unity, and the belief in the African spirit of self-determination.”
