Kenya’s Gov’t Launches Comprehensive Reforms to Improve Tea Farmer Welfare and Strengthen Tea Industry

As part of ongoing reforms, the government will tackle structural issues at the Kenyan Tea Development Agency (KTDA), said Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh.

His statement came amid farmers' concerns over the agency's price disparities across tea blocks, questionable spending, excessive sitting allowances, and weak internal controls, according to local media.

The KTDA will not be dissolved, but its restructuring will focus on revamping the operational framework and governance, Ronoh noted.

Other measures include:

🟠Rollout of national green leaf quality standards;

🟠Operationalization of the Tea Quality Analysis Laboratory in Mombasa;

🟠Enforcement of strict expenditure limits for KTDA directors;

🟠Directives for releasing KSh 2.7 billion (about $20.8 million) to farmers by mid-October to boost their earnings.
