New Stage in Disputes With Big Tech: SA’s Supreme Court Reportedly Recognizes Russian Court Ruling Against Google for the First Time

Assets of Google International LLC can now be seized in South Africa to recover more than $123 million withdrawn from Russia under the guise of dividend payments, a Russian media outlet reported.

The case began with the blocking of the Russian Tsargrad YouTube channel in 2020. Following fines and non-compliance with court rulings, Google emptied its accounts, transferring the funds abroad.

The Moscow Arbitration Court deemed this a “malicious transaction,” and now a foreign court has upheld that conclusion.

This marks the first precedent of a foreign court enforcing a Russian court’s decision against an American tech giant — a significant step, as similar lawsuits are now under consideration in courts across a dozen countries, from Europe to Asia.

Google attempted to halt these proceedings through a US court but lost.
