Africa on Front Line of Water Stress: Algerian Economist

Algeria is combating water shortages by focusing on seawater desalination using reverse osmosis technology, Farid Benyahiya explained to Sputnik Africa.

"Algeria has built five plants. 300,000 cubic meters per day multiplied by five, that's 1.5 million cubic meters of water. But the maintenance costs are very high," the economist said.

Benyahiya suggested that partnerships with Russia, China, or the BRICS countries could be a solution to finance these projects.

However, he recognized the challenge for landlocked African countries without access to the sea. The expert emphasized the urgency of equitable and sustainable management

"Starting with the UN, which has statistics, we must find solutions for equitable water distribution. We must also find ways to preserve this water so that there is no loss, through canals, etc."
