Madagascar’s Youth-Led Protests Reject Dialogue as Government Tightens Security Grip

After nearly two weeks of escalating anti-government protests in Madagascar, the youth-led “Gen Z Mada” movement has rejected President Andry Rajoelina’s offer of dialogue, calling it a “sham” and announcing a general strike and fresh demonstrations in the capital, Antananarivo.

Just a day before the rejection, Rajoelina had proposed a “national dialogue” to meet protesters’ demands and avoid a nationwide strike. The movement, which brings together about 20 organizations from civil society and youth groups, gave the president until Wednesday to issue a public apology for police violence and commit to reforms.

Earlier this week, Rajoelina dismissed his government and appointed an army general, Fortunat Zafisambo Ruffin, as prime minister. He also swiftly named three senior military and police figures to lead the key ministries of Armed Forces, Public Security, and National Gendarmerie Affairs, saying the country “no longer needs disruption but peace.”

Protesters, however, view these appointments as a move to consolidate control rather than address grievances.

🪧 The protests, which began on September 25 over severe power and water shortages lasting up to 12 hours a day, have evolved into broader calls for accountability and reform. According to the United Nations, at least 22 people have been killed and over 100 injured, a figure disputed by Madagascar’s authorities.
