Driven by growing interest in digital assets, Bitcoin adoption is accelerating across Africa. Rising trade volumes, institutional investments, and supportive policies are reshaping the continent’s cryptocurrency landscape and opening new paths for financial innovation.
South Africa’s Africa Bitcoin Corporation plans to raise $210 million to buy Bitcoin, a move that highlights the growing interest in digital currencies across Africa. The company aims to become the first publicly listed African firm to hold Bitcoin as its main treasury asset, following a global trend of companies using the cryptocurrency to protect against inflation and currency drops.
Bitcoin’s price has recently climbed past $126,000, reaching a new record high. At the same time, cryptocurrency use in Sub-Saharan Africa is rising rapidly. Between July 2024 and June 2025, the region received $205 billion in on-chain crypto transactions, according to media reports, up 52 percent from the previous year. This growth is fueled by inflation, unstable local currencies, and the need for faster, cheaper cross-border payments. Africa Bitcoin Corporation’s investment places it at the center of this expanding digital finance market.
In an interview with African Currents, Stafford Masie, Executive Chairman of Africa Bitcoin Corporation, formerly Altvest Capital, explained his firm’s move to become the first crypto treasury reserve in the region.

"Bitcoin was made for us [Africans]. It was made for Africa. If you take a look at its attributeswhat it does, how it operates, its behavior, its value propositions. These are so synergistic and coherent with the structural humane issues that we have in Africa," Masie said.
