Ethiopia is Model for Domestic Health Funding & Efficiency: Professor

There's been a shift in global health financing this year, with declining external donor support necessitating increased domestic funding and efficient resource management, Professor Biniam Tilahun, a fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, told Sputnik Africa.

The professor cited Ethiopia's recent significant budget increase to support healthcare previously funded externally as a prime example.

Ethiopian health workers are now using tablets, he said, noting that the primary research question is how to leverage AI to improve primary care.

Speaking at the International Conference on Primary Health Care 2025, he said this week's discussions will focus on revolutionizing primary care using digital technology and AI to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.

The professor congratulated Ethiopia on achieving Level Three maturity in WHO's global classification of national regulatory authorities, a significant achievement attained by only a few African countries.

This certification will enhance Ethiopia's reputation, he said, noting Ethiopian Airlines' role in vaccine delivery during COVID. Now, with Level Three certification, the quality of drugs transported through Addis Ababa via Ethiopian Airlines can be assured, the professor stated.
