The most promising negotiations since the war began two years ago will take place on October 6.
1⃣Participating Delegations
The Hamas delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday.
The Israeli delegation, led by Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, will arrive in Egypt on Monday.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, former senior advisor to President Trump, are also participating.
2⃣Negotiation Context
The meeting follows Donald Trump’s announcement last week of a new plan to end the war.
The plan includes a ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, and the gradual disarmament of Hamas.
Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are mediating to establish an implementation mechanism.
3⃣ Positions of the Parties
Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated support for the US proposal but stated that the Israeli military would remain in most of Gaza.
Hamas expressed strong interest in concluding an immediate agreement on a prisoner exchange and ceasefire but did not address disarmament, which other Palestinian factions deem “impossible.” It demands international guarantees for any agreement with Israel.
Main objective: finalize an agreement based on Trump’s plan.
Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan welcomed Hamas’s positive stance.
4⃣Conditions on the Ground
The ongoing war, which began on October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 67,000 deaths and more than 169,000 injuries in Gaza.
The Israeli military reported 1,150 deaths and over 6,300 injuries to date.
