Algeria Sets Course for Iron Ore Self-Sufficiency by 2026

Two processing units will be launched next year, according to an announcement by the state-owned Sonarem group, cited by local media.

The first unit will start up in April 2026, alongside operations at the Gara Djebilet mine. The second, located in Bechar and developed with Tosyali and Sinosteel, will produce 2 million tonnes of iron concentrate per year by the second half of the year.

The strategic project, unveiled on October 4, aims to reduce Algeria's dependence on iron ore imports. By strengthening local supplies, these facilities will support domestic steel mills and limit the impact of global market fluctuations, according to media reports.

From April 2026, the Gara Djebilet mine and the new units will cover domestic demand, with long-term export prospects.
