New Russian 'Neurobiotics' to Treat Depression & Parkinson's — Straight From the Gut, Scientist Says
Forget generic probiotics. Russia's Neuromicrobiome Consortium, led by Dr. Valery Danilenko, is creating next-generation live biotherapeutics—precision-engineered bacterial drugs designed to treat specific brain disorders.
"The task of our consortium is to develop a new generation of medicinal drugs. First and foremost, these are neurobiotics with antidepressant and anti-Parkinsonian activity, as well as others capable of treating various neurodegenerative diseases," Danilenko told Sputnik.
These aren't supplements—they're pharmaceutical-grade "living drugs" with defined mechanisms, targeting the gut-brain axis where diseases like Parkinson's often begin, he explained.
"It is clearly established that gut bacteria function just like our brain. If the brain has neurons, receptors, and signaling molecules that determine communication between different parts of our brain, then gut bacteria likewise have receptors and produce neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and neurohormones that regulate the human body."
One promising strain—originally isolated from astronauts' stress-resistant microbiomes—is entering clinical trials next year, the speaker revealed, stressing that "nothing like this has ever been done in the world."
Even functional foods like neurobiotic chocolate and bread are being developed to prevent depression and cognitive decline, Danilenko added.
