Kente Fabric Earns Global GI Protection — Ghana's First Geographical Indication: Reports
This achievement, launched by Ghana’s Registrar General’s Department in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization, reinforces Kente’s 2020 inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list—cementing its global cultural significance, local media said.
The GI protection means only authentic Kente made by Ghanaian weavers can carry the name, protecting cultural heritage and boosting artisans’ global market access.
Ghana now joins a growing list of African nations securing GI rights for iconic products:
Penja Pepper and Oku White Honey (Cameroon)
Rooibos Tea (South Africa)
Ziama-Macenta Coffee (Guinea)
Pâte de Karité de Sissili shea butter (Burkina Faso)
