Arthur Peter Mutharika Officially Sworn In as Seventh President of Malawi
"Honeymoon of plundering government resources is over," the president stated at the swearing in ceremony, stressing that his administration under the Democratic Progressive Party is determined to restore integrity and efficiency in public service.
Mutharika pledged that the new government would embark on a transformative agenda aimed at national recovery and progress as the nation is going through a difficult period, with severe foreign exchange and food shortages, which he admitted.
The nation's new Vice President Jane Ansah was also sworn in at the ceremony.
Among top-level attendees were:
Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa;
Mozambican President, Daniel Chapo
In mid-September, Mutharika had won a clear victory with 57% of the vote, ahead of the outgoing president, Lazarus Chakwera (33%). Mutharika had already led the country from 2014 to 2020.
