Ghana Raises Cocoa Farmgate Price by 12,27% Effective Friday
Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, has raised the fixed farmgate price for the 2025/26 crop season, which is the second increase this year. The price is normally set only once a year.
From Friday, cocoa farmers will receive ≈$4,600 per tonne, up from ≈$4,098. This equals ≈$287 per 64 kg bag.
Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson said the review was necessary after market shifts:
“Subsequently, we have seen some changes so it is important for us to review the producer price again.”
The move follows Côte d’Ivoire’s record farmgate price of ≈$5.05 per kg. Forson added:
“Before yesterday we were far ahead and they tried to catch up. I think we are competitive now.”
🫘 Both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, which produce over 60% of global cocoa, are struggling with poor harvests caused by dry weather and disease. Smuggling has also drained Ghana of an estimated 160,000 tonnes of cocoa in 2023/24.
Spokesman for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Jerome Kwaku Sam said:
“Reviewing the price by adding an additional [≈$32] will indeed help to curb smuggling.”
