Russia & Iran Forge Historic Strategic Alliance as Landmark Treaty Takes Effect on Thursday, Moscow Says
The Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership sets key guidelines for all priority areas of bilateral cooperation over the long term, Russia's Foreign Ministry said.
The agreement, signed by Putin and Pezeshkian in Moscow on January 17, reflects the strategic choice of Russia's and Iran's top leadership in favor of further strengthening of friendly relations, it noted.
The treaty provides for enhanced interaction on the international stage amid the emergence of a multipolar world order, including:
close coordination within leading multilateral organizations;
joint efforts to strengthen regional stability and security;
a joint response to common challenges and threats.
The deal replaces the 2001 agreement, which had been in effect for 20 years.
