Amid calls for a reformed United Nations to match today's realities, this episode amplifies the voice of an expert on the need for Africa to gain a permanent seat on the Security Council with veto power.
The message from African leaders at the 80th United Nations General Assembly was unified and unequivocal. In a fiery analysis, Abubakar Sadeeque Abba, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Abuja in Nigeria reframes the African position at the UN not as a plea, but as a non-negotiable demand for justice, with the power to walk away. Moving beyond diplomatic pleasantries, his analysis presents a continent that has reached its limit, issuing what can only be seen as an ultimatum to the outdated global order.
This double standard is not a mistake. It's not an accident. It is a deliberate policy by the people that are driving the UN to deny Africa certain fundamental rights and opportunities. So, the double standard is true. It's operational. It can be seen, it can be felt, and it has been in existence for almost eighty years of UN existence [...] The conditions that warranted the formation of United Nations organizations and the same conditions that warranted the composition of the United Nations Security Council are no longer realistic globally [....] We should be able to at least understand and appreciate the fact that Africa should be treated fairly and squarely at the United Nations. Otherwise, Africa is in a position now with 54 countries, the largest bloc in the UN, to take another decision outside the UN. We can form our own regional bloc [...] We are looking forward to seeing a UN that is now responsible and responsive to its own members. We are now looking forward to seeing a UN that has been opened and fair to each and every member of the organization,” the professor highlighted.
