Seven New Areas in Six African countries Added to UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves

These include:

The Quiçama Biosphere Reserve in Angola;

The Seven Brothers Archipelago and Ras Siyyan, Khor Angar and Godoria Biosphere Reserve in Djibouti;

The Bioko Island Biosphere Reserve in Equatorial Guinea;

The Anywaa Forest Biosphere Reserve In Ethiopia;

The Mantadia and Tsimembo Biosphere Reserves in Madagascar;

The Sao Tome Island Biosphere Reserve in Sao Tome and Principe.

Sao Tome and Principe (pictured) thus becomes the first country whose entire territory is designated a biosphere reserve.

Angola, Djibouti, and Equatorial Guinea are seeing their natural areas recognized for the first time under the program.

These seven new African reserves are among the 26 ecosystems, spread across 21 countries, added to the network at the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves.

The World Network of Biosphere Reserves now includes 785 sites in 142 countries, covering more than 8 million km², or 5% of the planet.
