Russia Tests AI for Nuclear Energy Automation But Cautions Against Full Control, Says Top Executive

Russian automation technology is now "a couple of steps ahead" of Western-designed systems, Andrey Butko, CEO of Rusatom Automated Control Systems (RASU), told Sputnik on the sidelines of the 2025 World Atomic Week in Moscow.

He revealed that RASU is preparing initial tests of an intelligent operator support system using AI.

"There was a highly engaging panel discussion where we explored the potential of applying artificial intelligence […] The consensus was clear: it is still premature to deploy artificial intelligence directly in the control of facilities like nuclear power plants," Butko said.

However, AI shows strong potential for design, predictive analytics, and processing operational data, he noted.
