Zimbabwe Bids for UNSC Seat to Advance Global Peace, Share Peacekeeping Legacy: FM at UNGA

Key statements from Amon Murwira's speech:

🟠Zimbabwe's dedication to multilateralism was reaffirmed – "no nation can prosper in isolation;"

🟠Any UN reform sidelining the Global South would contradict the UN Charter. The reform process must be member state-driven and inclusive;

🟠The post-World War II global economic, political, and security framework "does not reflect contemporary reality." Zimbabwe was a colony at the UN's inception;

🟠Decisions concerning Africa on the UNSC must not be made without African participation: "We cannot go back to 1884 when Africa was on the menu;"

🟠The empowerment of women and youth is crucial to sustainable peace and security.

🟠Zimbabwe has led SADC diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts in eastern DRC, and Zimbabwean peacekeepers have demonstrated professionalism.

🟠Zimbabwe is seeking a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the 2027-28 term, aiming to share its experiences.

🟠"Zimbabwe was born out of a protracted liberation struggle" — hence its solidarity with the people of Palestine.

🟠Zimbabwe is undergoing transformation under a "Leave No One Behind" strategy that includes investments in mining, tourism, women's empowerment, inclusion of people with disabilities, renewable energy and climate-smart agriculture.

🟠Unilateral sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe must be unconditionally removed due to their "human cost."
