Zimbabwe Sees Record 290% Surge in Food Crop Production for 2024-25 Farming Season, Report Reveals
This significant boost is attributed to favorable rainfall in the latter half of the season, creating optimal conditions for planting and growth, according to a Zimbabwe Livelihoods Assessment Committee report.
Key highlights from the 2025 Rural Livelihoods Assessment Report:
🟠Maize Production: Estimated at 2,293,556 tonnes.
🟠Traditional Grains: Production reached 634,650 tonnes, with sorghum and pearl millet showing increased yields due to improved agroecological tailoring.
🟠Total Cereal Output: Estimated at 2,928,206 tonnes.
🟠Other Crop Growth: Tobacco (+15%), cotton (+52%), and sunflower (+303%) production expected to increase.
🟠Government Support: Implementation of people-centered food security measures targeting 6 million rural individuals, including food packages.
🟠Water Security Initiative: The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme was implemented to increase access to safe drinking water.
🟠Trade Facilitation: Restrictions on maize grain trade were eased to improve flows and availability.
