World's Existing Multilateral & Global Organizations Becoming Ineffective to Solve Global South Problems: Indian FM

Speaking at a Global South meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the world faces “increasingly uncertain times,” driven by:

🟠the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,

🟠ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip,

🟠escalating extreme climate events,

🟠growing trade instability,

🟠a catastrophic slowdown in progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

"In face of such proliferation of concerns and multiplicity of risks, it is natural that the Global South would turn to multilateralism for solutions. Unfortunately, there too we are presented with a very disappointing prospect," Jaishankar said.

He emphasized that Global South countries are now tackling challenges together, guided by principles including:

🟠fair and transparent economic practices,

🟠a stable environment for balanced and sustainable economic interaction,

🟠resilient, reliable, and short supply chains,

🟠the urgent resolution of conflicts affecting food, fertilizer, and energy security, and a number of others.

To overcome these challenges, the Global South countries must strengthen cooperation in:

🟠vaccine production,

🟠digital opportunities,

🟠education,

🟠agricultural technology,

🟠small and medium-sized businesses.

"In areas like climate action and climate justice, come up with initiatives that serve the Global South rather than justify the Global North. Discuss the promise of technologies on the horizon, especially AI. Reform the United Nations and multilateralism as a whole."
