Zimbabwe Developing Local Rating Tool to Promote Green Buildings
The Green Building Council of Zimbabwe (GBCZ) is creating a rating and certification system to assess buildings on environmental, social, and economic performance, helping the country tackle climate change.
Buildings account for 40% of global carbon emissions, GBCZ Chair Mike Juru said at the 2025 Climate Expo in Bulawayo. Citing UN Habitat, he noted that 75% of 2050’s buildings are yet to be built — and with Zimbabwe’s young, growing population, 8 million people will need housing by 2050, making sustainable construction urgent.
Juru emphasized that green buildings are crucial for cutting emissions, conserving scarce water — which he warned could spark future global conflicts — and reducing landfill waste that encroaches on farmland.
GBCZ is working with Parliament to push legislation mandating and incentivizing green building practices, aiming to leave Zimbabwe with a sustainable, resilient built environment by 2050.
