Africa CDC Unveils $3.2B Financing Package to Boost Local Drug & Vaccine Manufacturing

According to Abebe Getenu, local manufacturing coordinator of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the funding combines:

🟠$2 billion pledged by Afreximbank for manufacturing infrastructure;

🟠$1.2 billion from the Gavi African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator, contingent on manufacturers achieving WHO prequalification.

Africa CDC is actively supporting companies to meet this global standard and is establishing an African Pooled Procurement Mechanism to guarantee market demand, Abebe Getenu noted at a meeting with drug developers in Uganda.

Brenda Nakazibwe, Team Lead for Pathogen Economy in Uganda’s Office of the President, emphasized Uganda’s commitment to local production to reduce dependence on imported medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics, a common challenge across Africa.
